What Changed in Google Search in 2026, and What UAE Businesses Should Fix
Four spam updates, a fact-check rule, no more FAQ rich results, and Gemini in place of Assistant
Google Search changed in four ways that matter to UAE businesses in 2026. Each change pushes in the same direction: Google now rewards facts a human has checked over markup, volume or tricks. Here is what happened, with sources, and the order we would fix things in.
Google Search changed four ways in 2026. Google ran four spam updates, the longest from September 24 to October 8. On October 1 it told sites to fact-check all AI content, including metadata. It stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7. From September 4, Gemini began replacing Google Assistant on Android.
Google Search changes in 2026 hit UAE websites on four fronts: spam enforcement, AI content rules, search display and voice answers. None of them asks for new tricks. Together they reward sites whose facts are accurate, consistent and checked by a person, in English and in Arabic. The table below sums up each change and its first fix.
| Date | Change | First fix for UAE sites |
|---|---|---|
| Mar, Jun, Aug, Sep 2026 | Four spam updates; the September one ran for about two weeks | Remove thin location pages and copied content |
| Oct 1, 2026 | Fact-check guidance for AI content, titles, meta descriptions, structured data and alt text | Human review of every AI-drafted page, including Arabic versions |
| May 7, 2026 | FAQ rich results no longer appear in Google Search | Keep FAQs that answer real questions; stop writing FAQs for display |
| Sep 4, 2026 | Gemini starts replacing Google Assistant on Android | Make your Google Business Profile and site facts match exactly |
Four Spam Updates, and One That Took Two Weeks
Google ran four spam updates in 2026. Three finished within about three days. The September update ran almost fourteen days.
According to Search Engine Roundtable, Google's 2026 spam updates ran from March 24 to 25, June 24 to 26, August 18 to 21, and September 24 to October 8. Google said the September update covered all regions and languages, so it reached Arabic results in the UAE too. Google said only that the update targets some of its spam policies, and the report notes it did not target link spam.
A spam update is an automated pass that lowers or removes pages that break Google's spam policies, such as scaled content, doorway pages and site reputation abuse. Sites hit by one usually recover only after they fix the cause and Google recrawls the pages.
Our read: the riskiest pattern on UAE sites is the location page set. One template copied for Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and every other emirate, with only the city name swapped, looks like a doorway page to a spam system. Each location page needs facts that only apply there: local clients, local regulations, local addresses or service areas.
The October 1 Rule: Fact-Check All AI Content
Google now says, in plain words, that a person must check AI-generated content before it goes live, and that the check covers metadata as well as body copy.
On October 1, 2026, Google edited the accuracy section of its Search Central guidance on generative AI content, as PPC Land reported. The new text explains that generative models "don't retrieve facts" but predict likely words, so their output can contain hallucinations. Google now calls manual fact-checking of all AI-generated content critical before publishing.
The same edit extends that review to title elements, meta descriptions, structured data and image alt text, because those can appear in Search results. TechWyse also reports that Google's helpful content guidance treats AI-generated headshots, fictional author names and false credentials as a form of deception.
The Arabic version is where AI errors hide
Most UAE sites publish English first and generate Arabic afterwards, often with AI. Nobody on the team reads the Arabic title tags, the Arabic alt text or the Arabic schema. That is exactly the metadata Google's October 1 edit now names. Our view: the Arabic half of a bilingual site carries more unchecked AI output than the English half, and it now sits squarely inside Google's review rule.
The fix is simple and boring: a native Arabic reader signs off titles, descriptions, alt text and structured data, the same way an editor signs off the English page.
FAQ Rich Results Are Gone. FAQ Markup Is Not.
The expandable question-and-answer snippets under search results no longer appear. The markup behind them still has a job.
Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026, and updated its structured data documentation the same day, according to TechWyse. Search Console removed the FAQ report in June, and API support ends in August. Google still reads FAQPage structured data to understand a page, and it has not asked sites to remove it.
FAQPage markup is JSON-LD code that labels each question and answer on a page. It no longer earns a visual feature in Google, but other systems still read it. We keep FAQ markup on Titan pages because Bing still uses it, and ChatGPT search draws on Bing results. The rule we follow: the markup must match the visible questions word for word, and every question must be one a buyer asks.
Gemini Replaces Google Assistant on Android
Spoken questions on Android phones now go to a generative AI model, not the old Assistant.
Google began removing Google Assistant from Android phones and tablets on September 4, 2026, and replaced it with Gemini, Search Engine Land reported. The change also covers Wear OS watches, compatible earbuds and Android Auto projected from a phone. Cars with Google built-in keep Assistant for now. Khaleej Times also covered the change for its UAE readers.
Our read on what this means for local search: when someone in Ras Al Khaimah asks their phone for the nearest clinic open now, a generative model writes the answer from your Google Business Profile, your website and third-party listings. If those sources disagree on hours, address or services, the answer can come out wrong or leave you out. Google's own AI Mode has answered searches in Arabic across the Middle East and North Africa since October 2025, per Google, so the same applies to Arabic queries.
The Fix Order We Use for UAE Sites
We applied these checks to titandigitaluae.com first, and we run the same order on client sites. Start at the top; each step makes the next one easier.
Remove or rewrite thin location pages
List every page that differs from another only by city or emirate name. Merge them, or add facts that only apply to that location: local clients, service areas, regulations and addresses.
Fact-check every AI-drafted page, in both languages
Give each AI-assisted page a named human reviewer. Check claims, numbers and names against a source, then check the Arabic version with a native reader.
Review titles, meta descriptions, alt text and schema
Google now names these in its AI content guidance. Read them as a customer would, and make sure structured data describes only what the page shows.
Remove fake authors and stock credentials
Every byline should belong to a real person with a real profile page. Replace AI-generated headshots and invented job titles with true details or a company byline.
Align your Google Business Profile with your website
Match name, address, phone, hours, services and categories exactly, in English and Arabic. Gemini, AI Mode and Maps all draw on these facts when they answer.
Keep FAQs that answer real questions, and keep their markup in sync
Drop FAQs written only to win a rich result. Keep the ones buyers ask, and make the FAQPage markup match the visible text word for word.

Frequently Asked Questions
What changed in Google Search in 2026?
Four things changed. Google ran four spam updates, in March, June, August and September, with the September update running from September 24 to October 8. On October 1, Google told sites to fact-check all AI content, including metadata. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7. From September 4, Gemini began replacing Google Assistant on Android.
Did the September 2026 spam update affect Arabic websites in the UAE?
It could have. Google said the September 2026 spam update covered all regions and languages, so Arabic pages and UAE results fell inside it. The update ran for about two weeks, from September 24 to October 8, and targeted some of Google's spam policies, not link spam. Sites that lost visibility should look for thin, copied or templated pages first.
Does Google penalise AI-generated content?
No. Google does not penalise content because AI helped write it. Its October 1, 2026 guidance says AI output can contain errors, so a person should fact-check all AI content before publishing, including titles, meta descriptions, structured data and alt text. Content that misleads readers, such as fake authors or invented credentials, falls under Google's quality and spam rules.
Should I remove FAQ schema now that FAQ rich results are gone?
No. Google stopped displaying FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026, but it still reads FAQPage markup to understand pages and has not asked sites to remove it. Bing also uses FAQ markup, and ChatGPT search draws on Bing. Keep FAQs that answer real buyer questions, and make sure the markup matches the visible text exactly.
How does Gemini replacing Google Assistant affect local businesses?
Spoken questions on Android now go to Gemini, a generative model that writes answers from sources such as your Google Business Profile, your website and directory listings. If those sources disagree on hours, address or services, the answer can be wrong or leave your business out. Consistent facts across every listing, in English and Arabic, matter more than before.
What should a UAE business fix first after the 2026 changes?
Start with thin or templated location pages, because spam updates target them. Next, fact-check AI-drafted content and metadata in both English and Arabic. Then align your Google Business Profile with your website. Titan Digital Marketing applies this order to its own site first and to client sites after, and the full checklist sits on this page.
